Scope of activity
The Water Economy Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences was formed in 1952. By the end of its
tenure of office 2004–2007, the Committee acted as a scientific committee at Division VII: Earth
Sciences and Mining Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In the years 2008-2011, it had the
status of a problem solving committee at the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences. At present, it
is a problem solving committee at Division IV: Technical Sciences of the PAS.

Tasks of the Water Economy Committee of the PAS for the tenure of office 2019-2022
During the tenure of office 2019-2022, the WEC activity will be focused on problems whose solving
requires both an interdisciplinary approach and a long-term perspective like the following:
1. To define major problems of water management as commonly agreed with specialists in spatial
planning, agriculture and forestry, as well as energy and transportation.
2. To search for synergy both in technology and the implementation of ecosystem services for
adaptation of water management to climate changes and the ongoing anthropopressure.
3. To identify questions of scientific interest that are of importance within the European research
area.
4. To run the scientific Schools of Hydrology, Hydraulics and Water Economy (a continuation) and
to initiate, in co-operation with selected universities, post-graduate studies in water management.
